How would you hack an elevator?

Forget about smart light bulbs or Internet-connected coffee machines. Imagine, if you had access to an entire elevator and could use it in you projects however you want.

You can. The world-known elevator and escalator manufacturer KONE is changing the gear in the IoT industry by arranging a hackathon that opens their People Flow API to hackers. The event is held 11th – 13th March 2016 in Hyvinkää, Finland. During the weekend, participants will have access to a test environment with real elevators and electric gates, where to test their wildest ideas in real life. The hackathon challenges include enhancing the end-user experience, creating tools for facility managers and maintenance or creating your own solution.

The event is sponsored by

  • KONE
  • IndoorAtlas (geomagnetic indoor positioning)
  • Spotify
  • TreLab (wearable wireless smart sensor solution for Industrial Equipment)
  • Samsung
  • Elisa IoT platform
  • and us, Proximi.io

who will be all providing their hardware or software for the participants to use.

We are so excited to be part of the hackathon with Proximi.io “If Here Then That” platform. Through Proximi.io, the participants will be able to gain fast access to all mobile location technologies (iBeacons, Eddystone beacons, IndoorAtlas, Wi-Fi, GPS and cellular) through a simple API. With our management portal, they’ll be able to easily draw geofences around interesting areas, and connect those to an unlimited amount of actions that will take place when a user walks into the area.

Here’s a little sneak peak of the Proximi.io action flow creator tool that will be published in our next release, and that will be available for the hackers:

By dragging and dropping the various nodes on the left, you can create complex interactions with IoT devices, external databases and content being pushed back to the mobile device. For example, you could draw a geofence in the lobby that would automatically order you an elevator when you enter the building, and start playing your favourite song via Spotify on the elevator speakers.

We are very much looking forward to the weekend and seeing what you, hackers, can come up with!

The registration ends on 3rd February, so make sure to sign up soon! If you are still hesitating, I should mention that there is a price of 3000€ for the winner.

See you there!
